The Refuge Animal Sanctuary

  ABOUT THE FOUNDER AND MEMBERS

Animals have always been as important to my family as I’m certain they are to you. As pets, companions and members of the family, we see to their well-being. There is plenty of food and great vet care available. And always, a great deal of love and attention.

Ten years ago, my husband and I bought a casita in the town of Todos Santos. The winters in Colorado are cold and a nice climate with wonderful scenery seemed the perfect escape. I began spending time there and immediately, as most new residents and tourists do, saw the horrible condition of so many animals. They were starving with protruding bones, almost hairless with mange, were tick and flea infested or were limping or dragging broken and never fixed limbs. The worst were the females who had obviously had many litters and were suffering from one or all of the above.

Within days of my arrival in Todos Santos, I had made friends with some longtime ex-pat residents who were doing whatever they could to help the animals in the area. They collected funds all year for a spay/neuter clinic run by visiting American vets. They picked up sick and injured animals and make the 2 hour drive to a vet in LaPaz. Janet, the owner of Tecolote Books, runs an effective adoption service in the shop. Cindy, who owns the Fenix gift shop, inoculates and feeds barrio animals in dire need. Angelique, a local real estate agent, runs yard sales and benefits to fund spay/neuter. Mariposa and Memo foster animals found dumped on beaches and deserts. They are all devoted to the work but only make a small impact as the job is immense.

For all of us it is so rewarding to see these animals come back to life when offered the smallest of things. Regular food, basic medical care and safety. The animals respond to a kind word or a soft touch--these cats, dogs and horses who have known only abuse. The love returned to us is impossible to measure.
